INSTITUTION / AI SAFETY

AI Safety

Research on AI evaluation, assurance, operating boundaries, human oversight, monitoring and incident response.

AI safety research focuses on the evidence, evaluation and operating controls required to keep intelligent systems within defined technical and institutional boundaries.

AI Safety / Assurance

Safety becomes operational when evaluation, permissions, human oversight, monitoring and incident response are tied to the specific systems and decisions where AI is used.

From model evaluation to system assurance

Model performance is only one component of safe deployment. Institutional assurance also depends on system architecture, data, tool access, user context, environmental conditions, human oversight and the consequences of failure. Safety therefore has to be evaluated at both model and system level.

01

Evaluation

Define capability, robustness, misuse, reliability and task-specific tests that reflect the actual operating environment.

02

Red teaming

Test adversarial behavior, tool misuse, prompt injection, jailbreaks, unsafe action paths and failure under unexpected conditions.

03

Operating boundaries

Specify approved tasks, data access, tool access, escalation conditions, prohibited actions and safe fallback behavior.

04

Human oversight

Define where human review is required, what information reviewers receive and when automated action must stop or escalate.

05

Monitoring

Observe model behavior, agent actions, drift, exceptions, incidents and control effectiveness after deployment.

06

Incident response

Prepare containment, rollback, revocation, investigation, notification and lessons-learned processes for AI-specific failures.

Safety as an evidence system

Institutional assurance requires records that can be reviewed: evaluation results, approved use cases, system boundaries, model and data provenance, human-oversight requirements, exceptions, monitoring outputs, incidents and remediation. These records turn safety from a principle into an operating discipline.

Research focus

Florida AI Research studies evaluation methods, agentic-system safeguards, critical-infrastructure assurance, human–AI decision systems, monitoring and the governance mechanisms that connect technical evidence to institutional accountability.
